International Player Watch – Suncorp Super Netball League 2022

The Suncorp Super Netball League 2022 begins this weekend in Australia, with eight teams taking to court in round one between the 26th and 27th March.

The season will be played across 14 rounds, before the finals take place between the 18th June and 2nd July, ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games which will begin on the 28th July.

Melbourne Vixens go into the season with the bragging rights, after they claimed the pre-season silverware at the end of February in the 2022 Suncorp Team Girls Cup when the beat West Coast Fever 45-43.

Here are just some of the international netballers you should look out for throughout the season:

Adelaide Thunderbirds

First up, at Thunderbirds keep an eye out for Jamaican Sunshine Girls defensive duo Shamera Sterling and Latanya Wilson. The defenders hope to dominate the circle together this season, as World Netball Ambassador Sterling begins her third season with the side and Wilson begins her first.

Collingwood Magpies

Two key players for Magpies this year are sure to be England Rose, Geva Mentor and Australian Dimond, Ash Brazil. The defenders both only missed one game for Magpies last season, with Geva reaching her milestone of 200 games and Ash making 54 turnovers across her matches. We can’t wait to see them back in action together!

Giants Netball

In the centre third, Amy Parameter, will be a game changer for Giants this year. In 2019, Parameter won the Super Netball Rising Star Award, and in 2021/2022 she was selected for the Diamonds Squad for the first time. Away from the court the wing defence does lots of fund raising as she runs ‘The Tie Dye Project’ to aid cancer research funding.

Melbourne Vixens

We are looking forward to seeing Austrian Diamond Liz Watson return to court for Melbourne Vixens this year in her ninth season, after spending a season on the sidelines due to having surgery. Watson remained heavily involved in the side from the sidelines in a leadership role, but it will be great to see her back on court this year!

New South Wales Swifts

You can expect a shooting masterclass from NSW Swifts again this season, with Trinidad and Tobago’s Samantha Wallace and England Roses Helen Housby in the circle. The two-time premiership winning shooting partnership have committed another two years to the Suncorp Superleague reigning champions.

Queensland Firebirds

Another shooting star that you won’t want to miss watching this season is Gretel Bueta. The Australian Diamond goal attack returned to court in 2021 following the birth of her son Bobby, and in that domestic season she scored 243 goals before then going on to win the Quad Series in England with Australia, where she was awarded Player of the Match in the final and Player of the Series, after shooting at 98% in the final.

Sunshine Coast Lightning

Jamaican Sunshine Girl Kadie-Ann Dehaney has joined Sunshine Coast Lightning this season, after leaving Melboune Vixens. The agile and athletic defender will be one to look out for as she hopes for more time in the defensive circle following a strong showing in the recent years at Vixens.

West Coast Fever

West Coast Fever shooter and Jamaican Sunshine Girl, Jhaniele Fowler, has been awarded Suncorp Super Netball Player of the Year for the last four seasons and will be hoping to make it a 5th year running in 2022. Last season, Fowler was the leagues top goal scorer with 891 goals and even shot at 100% in three matches.

Good luck to all teams involved in the Suncorp Super Netball League this season!
