Defending champions Mystics get off to the perfect start in Round 1 of the ANZ Premiership

The ANZ Premiership (ANZP) got underway this weekend, with all 6 teams taking to court, as the international Netball Family tuned in on NetballPass.

The weekend started with the defending Champions Northern Mystics taking on Magic, and it was actually Magic that got off to the stronger start winning the first quarter 16-14, before Mystics found their rhythm from last season, regaining control and winning the match 52-64.

Despite being on the eventual losing side the new Magic shooting combination of Silver Fern’s Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Saviour Tui was great to watch, with the duo looking to have gelled together already, as they both shot at 88%.

Elsewhere another international netballer that took to court was Tongan defender, Kelea Longi, who has joined Pulse this season having been a training partner with both the Swifts and Giants in Australia’s Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) for the past few seasons.

Longi, who was vice-captain of the Tongan Tala at the Netball World Cup 2023, only took to court for three minutes, however, along with her teammates managed to ensure that Pulse beat Stars 51-58.

The final match of the weekend saw Tactix welcome Steel, and it was Tactix that got their season off to a flying start with the biggest victory of the weekend as they beat Steel by 17 goals.

South African born Silver Fern, Karin Burger, was one to watch in this match as she helped her side secure the victory with a dominant performance in defence, making four interceptions and six gains.
