Netball Super League International Player Watch – Round 5

The Netball Super League (NSL) Round 5 took place this weekend live on NetballPass*, BBC and Sky Sports, with Thunder finishing strong to beat Rhinos, Lightning holding off a late Dragons comeback, Mavericks ending Forest’s perfect home record, and Pulse retaining their undefeated title.

Here is this week’s international player spotlight:

Nottingham Forest vs London Mavericks

London Mavericks had their strongest start to a game this season as they travelled to Forest and took the early lead in the first quarter, before going on to win the game 67-56 ending Nottingham Forest’s unbeaten home record.

Australian goal shooter, Emily Andrew, continued to shine in the NSL in this match as she led the way scoring 41 goals which saw her season tally so far go up to 186, with an 89% shooting accuracy.

Manchester Thunder vs Leeds Rhinos  

This one was a rather close encounter with Manchester Thunder only leading by two goals with eight minutes to go in this game.

One standout international player was Elmeré van der Berg, the South African SPAR Protea scored 30 goals for her Thunder side as they beat Rhinos 71-57.

Van der Berg is now top of the goals scored chart, with 194 goals to her name this season.

The victory now means in Round 6 we will see a top of the table clash, with 1st place London Pulse set to host 2nd place Manchester Thunder on Friday 18th April.

Loughborough Lightning vs Celtic Dragons

Sticking with the theme of stand-out international shooters, Samantha Wallace-Joseph was crucial to Loughborough Lightnings 70-63 victory over Celtic Dragons.

It was the Trinidad & Tobago stars second appearances for Lightning since joining at the start of the season, and she did not disappoint as she scored 40 goals and five Super Shots, ensuring no Dragons come back was ever enough.

Birmingham Panthers vs London Pulse

Finally, London Pulse continued their perfect record with a 58-68 win over Birmingham Panthers.

England Rose Alicia Scholes was awarded the Player of the Match for the third time this season, for yet another play maker performance where she put in 27 feeds and received 25 centre passes.

Everyone at World Netball also sends the well wishes to Panthers Gabby Marshall who suffered an injury just over 20 minutes into the third quarter.
