International Player Watch – Suncorp Super Netball League 2022 Round 7

The Suncorp Super Netball League in Australia reached Round 7 this weekend, and four matches took place across two days.

It was one of the most exciting rounds yet with league upsets, goal scoring records made and international teammates going head to head.

We have pulled out just a few of Round 7’s highlights for you all…

Firebirds 73 – 60 Swifts

Swifts continued to struggle in Round 7, as they fell to Firebirds in their 5th defeat of the season leaving their hopes of winning back-to-back Super Netball premierships on the rocks.

Meanwhile for Firebirds, it was a big win following their shock Round 6 defeat to bottom of the table Magpies.

One standout player was Firebirds and England Roses’, Eboni Usoro-Brown, who was persistent at goal keeper, against fellow Rose Helen Housby, who was playing goal shooter for Swifts.

Thunderbirds 51 – 60 Fever

A strong first Fever half secured them the victory over Thunderbirds, despite the home side having a final 15 minute-comeback.

One battle that no one could take their eyes off was that of the two Jamaican Sunshine Girls, Fever’s Jhaniele Fowler and Thunderbirds’ Shamera Sterling, in the circle.

The two international teammates are currently both at the top of their game, with Fowler being the leagues’ highest goal scorer and Sterling topping the leagues chart for interceptions.

Sterling managed to keep Fowler below her season average of 57 goals, but the shooter still shot 50 at 98%, securing her team the victory.

Lightning 54 – 82 Giants

Giants equalled the all-time league scoring record with their 54-82 victory over Lightning on Sunday at the USC Stadium.

It was the first time that Giants had beaten Lightning since 2018, as they dominated throughout the court.

It has to be the Giants shooters, England Rose Jo Harten and Australia Diamond Sophie Dwyer, that are recognised this week though for matching the goal scoring record, in a standout performance which put Harten 5th on the leagues goal scoring charts

Vixens 60 – 70 Magpies

Finally, to round off the weekend netball fans were able to witness perhaps one of the biggest upsets of the season as bottom of the league Magpies beat top of the table Vixens, in a Melbourne derby.

Magpies were strong from the outset, with Kelsey Browne (Australian Diamond) and Molly Jovic leading by example at wing attack and centre taking the ball safely down the court and into the hands of their shooters who capitalised on their chances.
