NSW Swifts 48 – 53 Vixens
The round started with Swifts welcoming Vixens to the Ken Rosewall arena. A strong first half from the visitors made it impossible for Swifts to come back, despite the home side winning the last two quarters. One standout player that made a difference in the close contest was Vixen’s Emily Mannix (Australian Diamond), who made five intercepts in the first half which proved to be very important during swifts second-half surge. At the other end of the court for Vixens, their captain, and Australia Diamond, Liz Watson ensured the ball always made it safely into the shooting circle with 35 feeds into her shooters, 30 of which led to an attempt on goal. The eventual 48-53 victory meant that Vixens put their second win on the board and remaining unbeaten.
Lightning 54 – 82 Firebirds
The second match of the weekend saw Lightning suffer a heavy defeat to Firebirds. It was an all-round world-class performance from Firebirds with shooter Donnell Wallam, defender Ruby Bakewell-Doran and midcourters Lara Dunkley and Kim Ravaillion all proving to be untouchable as they stuck to task and got their jobs done. England Rose, Eboni Usoro-Brown, also played her part for Firebirds, in her second game for them since joining them at the start of the season from the Vitality Netball Superleague.
Magpies 53 -70 Fever
Another team that continued their unbeaten run in a high-scoring games was West Coast Fever, who beat Magpies 53 – 70. Jamaican Sunshine Girl, and Fever shooter Jhaniele Fowler put on a shooting masterclass once again as she scored 58 or her 61 shots, putting her at the top of the goals scored chart. Whilst at the other end of the court for Fever Australian Diamond Courtney Bruce dominated the defensive circle.
Thunderbirds 56 – 43 Giants
All eyes were on World Netball Athlete Ambassador, Shamera Sterling, as the Jamaican Sunshine Girl’s outstanding defensive display for Thunderbirds helped them secure a 55-43 victory over Giants to close Round Two. Sterling was untouchable in the defensive circle as she made seven rebounds, five intercepts and five deflections against a depleted Giants side. The visitors were without six of their players, including Australian Diamonds trio Jamie-Lee Price, Sophie Dwyer and Amy Parmenter due to COVID-19 protocols.
