Suncorp Super Netball League International Player Watch – Round 11

There was lots of celebrate in Melbourne following Round 11 of the Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) with both Melbourne Mavericks and Melbourne Vixen’s securing curial victories – keep reading to see what this means for the league table!

Giants Netball vs Adelaide Thunderbirds

Adelaide Thunderbirds got the First Nations Round underway in style with their biggest ever SSN winning margin as they beat Giants Netball 37 – 70.

In a full team performance in which Thunderbirds won every quarter by at least five goals, their strongest being the second quarter which they won by 17.

Stand out international players included, Jamaican Sunshine Girl Latanya Wilson who made five gains and two interceptions and South Africa SPAR Protea Elmeré van der Berg who scored 56 goals.

Melbourne Mavericks vs Sunshine Coast Lightning

A dominant second half from Melbourne Mavericks saw them secure a much needed 63 – 53 victory over Sunshine Coast Lightning, keeping them firmly in that fourth placed position.

In the first half, not much separated the two sides with them taking a quarter each and Lightning the ones leading 27-29 at the main break.

Australian Diamond Liz Watson was crucial for Lightning as she commanded the midcourt making four turnovers and 22 goal assists at centre.

However, it was Mavericks that flew out the blocks in quarter three with Australian Diamond Jamie-Lee Price igniting the comeback with an early interception.

From then on Mavericks took control, with their Jamaican Sunshine Girl shooter, Shimona Nelson, clinical under post scoring 56 goals, whilst also making four turnovers.

Mavericks went on to win the third quarter 17-12 and the fourth 19-12 making the work of Mavericks in the first half redundant.

Queensland Firebirds vs West Coast Fever

A clinical three quarters secured West Coast Fever a 51 – 69 victory over Queensland Firebirds in Round 11 of the SSN.

The Fever party started early as they shot into game winning both the first and second quarters by 10 goals.

England Rose Sasha Glasgow was clinical from the start scoring 12 one point shots and three Super Shots, as well as making 19 goal assists.

Glasgow and Australian Diamond Alice Teague-Neeld worked seamlessly together on centre passes, ensuring that they had a 75% centre pass conversion rate, compared to Firebirds 35%.

Going into the final break, Fever led by an outstanding 28 goals.

Firebirds did bounce back in the final 15 minutes, winning this by 10 goals, however it was too little too late.

Melbourne Vixens vs NSW Swifts

In the final game of Round 11 Melbourne Vixens bounced back from their first defeat of the season last week to beat NSW Swifts 67 – 57.

Vixens’ intent was clear from the first whistle as they scored the first four goals of the contest, with Australian Diamond Sophie Garbin shooting at 100% in the first 15 minutes.

The home sides midcourt trio of Kate Moloney, Kate Eddy and Zara Walters, were untouchable as they moved the ball through court with ease.

Diamond Moloney finished the game with 21 goal assists, 29 feeds and three turnovers and in the second quarter was the highest rated player in court.

Swifts made a comeback in the last five minutes of every quarter, but it was never enough as Vixens won all four quarters and the match.
