Chris Burton OAM

World Netball (WN) is deeply saddened by the passing of WN Service Award Holder and Netball Australia (NA) Hall of Fame Legend, Chris Burton OAM, one of the most influential and respected figures in Australian and international netball.

An Australian Diamond, an accomplished umpire, an administrator, educator and mentor, Chris dedicated her life to the advancement of netball.

Employed from 1991 to 2012 by NA as the National Director of Umpiring, Chris was dedicated, not just to Australia’s umpires and their development, but, in recognition of the long-term benefits to all players and the game itself and was equally as dedicated to the development of umpiring skills globally.

Chris’ first experience of elite netball came when she was selected as a member of the team of her home state of South Australia.

She made the national team in 1964 and was a key member for more than a decade, serving as vice-captain from 1972 to 1975.

Chris competed in two Netball World Cups (NWC), earning a silver medal in 1967 and a gold in 1975.

It was during her playing career that Chris was awarded the All Australia Umpires Badge.

Following her retirement as a player, she umpired at the NA National Championships for the next 13 years, as well as the NA Super League.

She also officiated at three NWCs and one World Games and was a member of the Umpires Appointments Panel at numerous NWCs, Commonwealth Games and Netball World Youth Cups.

Chris also served for extensive periods on the WN’s Rules Committee, Umpires Committee and International Testing Panel, contributing her broad knowledge of the game.

In 1999 Chris was elected as a Board Member of  World Netball and served, with distinction, until 2007.

Her extraordinary contribution was recognised through numerous honours, including the WN Service Award, NA Life Membership, the NA Service Award, and the Medal of the Order of Australia.

In 2022, she was elevated to Legend status in the NA Hall of Fame, the highest recognition bestowed by the sport in Australia.

Chris helped shape the sport at every level, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to influence the game today.
