Movement at the top & bottom of the table in the SSN following Round 9

The Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) had everything in Round 9, from league movement to close contests and some huge win margins too – and it was all live on NetballPass across three days!

The first match of the weekend was between Adelaide Thunderbirds and West Coast Fever, and those tuning in were expecting it to be a close contest after only one goal separated the two sides last time that they met in Round 6.

However, this time things were very different with Thunderbirds flying out of the blocks, and growing stronger and stronger keeping, then top of the table, Fever to just 9 goals in the second and fourth quarters.

It was Thunderbirds Jamaican Sunshine Girls that proved the real difference, with Latanya Wislon making nine gains and Shamera Sterling Humphrey a further seven, whilst Romelda Aiken-George scored 50 goals at the other end.

Thunderbirds eventually won the match 68-50, a victory which Vixens went on to capitalise on as they stole to the top spot from Fever when they beat Melbourne rivals, Mavericks, in the Victorian derby.

Mavericks appeared to be really missing England Rose, Eleanor Cardwell, in their circle, whilst Vixen’s Australian Diamonds shooting duo of Kiera Austin and Sophie Garbin were very much on court, with their connection just growing as the game progressed.

Vixens went on to win the match 77-58, and now sit top of the table as the only team with just one defeat all season.

The other two matches in the SSN this weekend were much closer encounters, with Swifts final quarter comeback not quite enough to beat Lightning, whilst Giants just edged it against Firebirds to lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

Swifts 64-66 defeat to Lightning was their 3rd consecutive defeat and has left them only above Mavericks and Giants on goal percentage.

Things could go from bad to worse for Swifts in Round 10 as Mavericks face bottom of the table Firebirds, and if things go Mavericks way, they could over take Swifts.

Also, in Round 10 on NetballPass the Netball Family will be able to watch:

  • Giants vs Thunderbirds
  • Lightning vs Vixens
  • Fever vs Swifts
