Adelaide Thunderbirds have been crowned Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) Champions, after they beat Melbourne Vixens 61 – 40 in the Grand Final live on NetballPass*.
The 21-goal win is the biggest Grand Final score margin in history, and marks Thunderbirds third premiership in four years.
Despite what the scoreline may suggest it was a very close first quarter which largely went goal for goal, before Australian Diamond Kiera Austin scored a Suncorp Super Shot to give Vixens a well-deserved one goal advantage going into the first break.
However, Thunderbirds flew out the blocks in front of a 10,040 packed John Cain Arena as the second quarter began and went on a 5-0 goal scoring streak.
It was at this point that Jamaican Sunshine Girls Latanya Wilson and Shamera Sterling-Humphrey began to dominate in defence, before eventually racking up a combined five interceptions, 16 gains and three turnovers.
Wilson was later awarded MVP for her stand out performance.
Whilst at the other end South African SPAR Protea Elmeré van der Berg scored her 21st goal, giving Thunderbirds a 23 – 16 lead which they extended to a 32 – 20 lead by the main break.
Van der Berg went on score 51 out of her 52 shots in this game, taking her goal scoring tally up to 708 for the season.
As the second half began it as clear Vixens were fired up to make a comeback, but Australian Diamond Sophie Casey had other ideas as she made a huge interception to keep the momentum going Thunderbirds way.
Whilst Vixens were in the game more in the third quarter, there was still no catching Thunderbirds who won the remaining two quarters and the game.
