The regular Suncorp Super Netball League season (SSN) has come to an end with Thunderbirds finishing top of the table.
Going into the final round the top three teams, Thunderbirds, Vixens and Fever, were only separated by goal difference, meaning wins were crucial for all for them to not be overtaken.
First up, Vixen’s had a strong win against Firebirds, coming out on top in the first three quarters before drawing the fourth so the final score sat at 52-62.
Australian Diamonds Sophie Garbin and Keira Austin were crucial in this contest for Vixens with Garbin missing just one shot, and Austin two.
Fever then took to court with the aim of overtaking Vixens as they faced Mavericks.
To do so, Fever needed to beat Mavericks by 24 goals, but Mavericks were not about to roll over as a win for them would see them potentially make finals in their first ever season.
At half time just four goals separated the two teams with Fever leading 34-30, leaving it all still to play for in the second half.
The third quarter started goal for goal, before Australian Diamond Sunday Aryang made an all-important intercept for the home team allowing them to go on a little run and extend their lead.
Fever went on to win the game 76-57, meaning Vixens finished the league in second place above Fever in 3rd by 0.52% goal percentage due to their larger win margin.
Elsewhere, just as much pressure was on between Thunderbirds and Lightning, as Thunderbirds needed to win to become Minor Premier Champions.
For Lightning, their league position of 4th was already confirmed after Mavericks lost to Fever the day before.
However, despite having nothing to play for themselves Lightning weren’t about to give up as they took it to Thunderbirds in every quarter, eventually beating them 13-17 in the fourth.
Lightnings strike back wasn’t quite enough to knock down the Thunderbirds though who won the match 64-62, to be crowned Minor Premiers Champions.
The final match of the regular season was between two of the sides at the bottom of the table Giants and Swifts.
It was clear in this one that both teams wanted to end their season on a high, with the match going down to the final minute.
Despite Giants leading nearly the entire game, it was Swifts that redeemed their poor run of results as they pulled off a last minute one goal win, 72-71, against Giants who now finish the table rock bottom.
England Rose Helen Housby was key for Swifts as she scored six Super Shots, which saw her finish the regular season top of the Super Shots charts, with 114 to her name and saw Swifts get across the line.
