Suncorp Super Netball League International Player Watch – Round 4

Round 4 of the Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) took place this weekend with the undefeated duo Adelaide Thunderbirds and Melbourne Vixens put to the test, live and on demand on NetballPass* for the international Netball Family.

Here is this week’s International Player Watch:

Giants vs Queensland Firebirds

Both Giants and Firebirds entered this match looking for their first wins of the season, and it was the visitors that made sure they climbed the table with a strong start to the clash.

Whilst the Giants endured periods of possession, it was their inability to capitalise on that and score goals that led to Firebirds taking a 12-22 lead into the first break.

Australian Diamond Ruby Bakewell-Doran was key for Firebirds as she made three intercepts, five rebounds and three deflections as her side won the game 55 – 78.

Melbourne Mavericks vs Adelaide Thunderbirds

Adelaide Thunderbirds made it four straight wins for the first time since 2006, as they beat Melbourne Mavericks 48 – 55, but it wasn’t an easy task.

Mavericks were the first team this season to give Thunderbirds a run for their money, staying hot on their tails throughout the clash and never letting them pull away.

As they have all season Thunderbirds found a way, with Jamaican Sunshine Girl Latanya Wilson making a key intercept to ensure the gap remained 35 – 40 with 15 minutes to go.

Thunderbirds then flew out the blocks in the final quarter, taking an 11 goal lead at one point.

Wilson was instrumental to the eventual victory as she made five interceptions and eight deflections.

NSW Swifts vs West Coast Fever

Second half dominance from West Coast Fever saw them beat NSW Swifts 55 -77 in Round 4.

Jamaica Sunshine Girl Romelda Aiken George shone at one end of the court with 67 goals, whilst England Rose Fran Williams was a force to be reckoned with at the other as she made 5 gains.

Aiken George is now hot on the tails of Thunderbirds South Africa SPAR Protea Elmeré van der Berg in terms of goals scored this season, with Aiken-George having 202 to her name in 2nd and van der Berg at the top with 206 goals this season.

Melbourne Vixens vs Sunshine Coast Lightning

Melbourne Vixens were another team put the test this weekend and made to work for their unbeaten record to stay alive.

Vixens were down by as many as seven goals during a period of the first half, with Lightning’s defence working hard to force multiple errors.

However, eventual MVP Australian Diamond Kiera Austin scored a flurry of 5 Super Shots to close the gap to just one at half time.

It was the penultimate quarter that proved the difference with Vixens showing their class and bouncing back to take the lead and eventually win by 11 goals, 70-59.
