Suncorp Super Netball League International Player Watch – Round 13

Round 13 of the Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) took place live on NetballPass.*, Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge this weekend, with West Coast Fever winning their 11th consecutive league match, securing the Minor Premiership and a home Major Semi-Final. 

NSW Swifts vs Sunshine Coast Lightning

Sunshine Coast Lightning shocked high flighting NSW Swifts as they pulled off a dramatic one-point win at the Ken Rosewall Arena.

It was Australian Diamond Steph Fretwell that held her nerve in the dying second, scoring a Super Shot to secure the 70 – 71 win for her Lightning team.

The win means that Lightning now sit 5th in the league, behind Thunderbirds by just goal difference, whilst Swifts remain 2nd behind Fever.

Adelaide Thunderbirds vs Melbourne Mavericks

Adelaide Thunderbirds ensured they remained in the top four, with a 60 – 49 win over Melbourne Mavericks.

This was a game of two halves, with Thunderbirds dominating the opening two quarters, before Mavericks grew into the game winning the 3rd and drawing the 4th quarter.

Thunderbirds worked hard to ensure a Mavericks comeback was off the cards, with Jamaican Sunshine Girl Latanya Wilson untouchable in defence as she made nine interceptions, 12 gains and three turnovers.

Wilson now sits top of both the deflection and interception charts, with 88 deflections and 39 interceptions so far this season.

Melbourne Vixens vs Queensland Firebirds

Whilst Thunderbirds kept their top four chances alive, Melbourne Vixens locked their top four spot for the season in with a 64 – 62 win against Queensland Firebirds, meaning they are guaranteed a Finals spot.

It wasn’t an easy contest for Vixens though, as the lead see-sawed constantly, with the teams taking it in turns to win a quarter throughout.

With 15 minutes to go Vixens lead 49-44, but a flurry of Super Shots from Firebirds closed the gap to just one goal again.

Vixens managed to hold on, with Australian Diamond Kiera Austin taking Player of the Match as a reward for her 22-centre pass receives, 18 goals and two Super Shots.

West Coast Fever vs Giants Netball

It was a day to remember for West Coast Fever as they won their 11th consecutive match, sealing the Minor Premiership and confirming their spot in the Major Semi Final as the home team.  

Fever flew out of the blocks in front of a home crowd of 11,8000, asserting their dominance from the first whistle as they went on to win all four quarters.

It was a full team performance for Fever, with Jamaican Sunshine Girl Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard clincal under post as she scored 63/66 of her shots, whilst at the other end of the court Australian Diamond Sunday Aryang was a force to be reckoned with at goal defence as she made three interceptions, seven gains and four turnovers.

Fever went on to win the game 73 – 56.
