Suncorp Super Netball League International Player Watch – Round 12

Round 12 of the Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) took place live on NetballPass*, Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge this weekend, with one of the biggest upsets of the season as Mavericks beat Swifts knocking them off the top spot.

Sunshine Coast Lightning vs West Coast Fever

West Coast Fever climbed into 1st place in the league as they became the first team to win 10 matches this season, when they beat Sunshine Coast Lightning 54 – 69.

The Fever party started from the first whistle, as they flew out the blocks ensuring they were 9 goals up by the first break – a lead which they only ever extended.

The Jamaican Sunshine Girl duo of Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard and Shanice Beckford worked seamlessly together in the shooting circle, with Fowler scoring 49/51 of her shots, and Beckford 16/17 of hers.

Beckford acted as a real play maker as she received the most centre passes at 21, whilst also putting in 17 feeds, 10 goal assists and making seven turnovers.

Melbourne Mavericks vs NSW Swifts

Then came perhaps the biggest upset of the season when Melbourne Mavericks beat then top of the table NSW Swifts, 68 – 64.

This result means Swifts now sit 2nd in the table, behind Fever.

It was Swifts that went ahead by seven initially, but Mavericks never stopped fighting with South Australian Jessie Grenvold making a crucial interception to bring things back level, before her side went on to win the first quarter – the battle between Grenvold and New Zealand Silver Fern Grace Nweke was one you couldn’t take your eyes off!

In the mid court for Mavs, it was Australia’s Molly Jovic that stole the show, as she set the tone throughout, making 32 goal assists, 44 feeds and four turnovers, all which proved crucial as her side held off a final quarter comeback from Swifts to win the game by four goals.

Melbourne Vixens vs Adelaide Thunderbirds

Adelaide Thunderbirds pushed themselves back into the top four with a hard-earned win over Melbourne Vixens in Round 12 of the SSN.

In a game where the lead changed hands multiple times with Thunderbirds leading 14-19 after the first 15 minutes, and Vixens leading 46-44 going into the final 15 minutes, it was never clear which way this game was going to go.

However, it was Thunderbirds that burst out the blocks in the last quarter winning this 7-12 and taking the game 53 – 56.

Despite being carried off in the closing minutes due to cramp Thunderbirds Jamaican Sunshine Girl Latanya Wilson was crucial to this fight back from the defending premiers, as she made one interception and five gains.

Queensland Firebirds vs Giants Netball

In a bottom of the table clash, it was Giants that finished on top producing a final quarter comeback to beat Firebirds 63 – 68, leaving them bottom of the table.

The lead ebbed and flowed in this game, with the two teams sharing the quarter victories evenly.

At the final break, it was Firebirds that had the lead by just one goal leaving it all still to play for.

Australian Diamond Matisse Letherbarrow was the gamechanger that entered the court for the final 15 minutes for Giants, making an instant impact as she scored 4/5 Super Shots, one of which was the winning goal.

Another Giants shooter who we must recognise this week is retired England Rose Jo Harten, as she played in her 200th national league game, scoring 24 goals and three Super Shots in the process.
