Suncorp Super Netball League International Player Watch – Round 11

Round 11 of the Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) took place live on NetballPass*, Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge this weekend, with four tightly contested games taking place.

West Coast Fever vs Adelaide Thunderbirds

Friday night netball returned to the SSN, as West Coast Fever welcome Adelaide Thunderbirds for a nail biting clash.

It was the battle of the Jamaican Sunshine Girls in the Thunderbirds shooting circle as Romelda Aiken-George, and Fevers Kadie-Ann Dehaney worked tirelessly against each other in an attempt to win control of the circle.

With just 15 minutes to go the score sat at 51-51 leaving it all still to play for, but Fever’s patient play and accuracy in the shooting circle paid off as they secured the win 68 – 63.

Fever’s defensive line of Sunday Aryang, Jess Anstiss and Dehaney proved curical as they accounted for six gains.

Sunshine Coast Lightning vs Melbourne Vixens

Next up was another extremely close battle, with only three goals separating Sunshine Coast Lightning and Melbourne Vixens at full time.

It was Vixens that came out on top, 65 – 68, meaning they also claimed the third-place spot in the table pushing their opposition down to fourth.

After a first quarter mishap, Vixens took control in the second and third quarters, and then just about did enough to hold off a Lightning come back in the final 15 minutes.

Australian Diamond Kiera Austin was once again on fire for Vixens, as she scored 22 goals, 1 Super Shot, and provided 19 goal assists, as well as receiving 29 centre passes acting as a real playmaker.

NSW Swifts vs Giants Netball

NSW Swifts pulled off one of the comebacks of the season in Round 11 as they returned to winning ways beating Giants Netball 75 – 66.

Swifts started slow, finding themselves at the wrong end of a 10-21 scoreline after the first 15 minutes.

However, slowly but surely the home side built their way back into the game winning the remaining three quarters and edging out the eventual win the final quarter.

On key international player in this comeback was Australia’s Teigan O’Shannassy whose interception midway through the third quarter changed the rhythm of the game and allowed Swifts to push on forward fuelled by the noise of their home crowd.

Queensland Firebirds vs Melbourne Mavericks

Finally, we had a bottom of the table clash between Queensland Firebirds and Melbourne Mavericks, and it was the visitors that ended their four-game losing streak, winning the match 54 – 65.

Mavericks flew out the blocks taking an early 9 – 20 lead, before Firebirds retaliated in the second quarter bringing the score back to 31 – 34, leaving it all still to play for in the second half.

Australia’s Molly Jovic was instrumental for Mavericks as she helped her team transition the ball seamlessly through court in attack, whilst also disrupting play in defence making two interceptions, two gains and seven turnovers.

Mavericks won the remaining two quarters and the game, leaving Firebirds rock bottom of the table and still waiting for their first win since Round 2.
