Suncorp Super Netball League International Player Watch – Round 4

Round 4 of the Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) took place live on NetballPass.*, Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge this weekend, with nail biting clashes across the board, as international players stood up when it mattered most.

Here is this week’s International Player Watch:

Giants Netball vs Adelaide Thunderbirds

Giants Netball claimed their first win of the season in style this weekend, as they beat the defending Champions Adelaide Thunderbird, 64-63.

It was hard to pick one international player to spotlight from this clash, with Giants putting on a full team performance to ensure they secured the win.

Jamaican Sunshine Girl, Jodi Ann-ward was key to Giants winning ball, whilst retired England Rose Jo Harten and Australian Diamond Sophie Dwyer were calm and composed under post, ensuring Giants got the eventual win.

Our congratulations also go to Thunderbirds and Jamaican Sunshine Girl, Shamera Sterling-Humphrey, who is expecting her first baby. Sterling-Humphrey will not compete in the remainder of the SSN season.

West Coast Fever vs Sunshine Coast Lightning

Next up, we had another very close encounter between West Coast Fever and Sunshine Coast Lightning, with nothing splitting the two teams at half time as they drew the opening two quarters.

It was Lightning that then found themselves ahead at the penultimate break, before Fever found a way to come back in the final 15 minutes winning the nail-biting match, 68-66.

In just her second game back this season Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard did not disappoint, as she scored all 54 of her one-point shots, as well as netting one Super Shot.

The Jamaican Sunshine Girl now finds herself 5th in the goals scored charts, despite only featuring in two of the four rounds.

Melbourne Mavericks vs Melbourne Vixens

Melbourne Vixens kept up their unbeaten Melbourne derby streak, as they once again beat Melbourne Mavericks in the league.

Vixens 67-59 victory means that Mavericks are still yet to beat them since joining the league last season.

It was a nervy first quarter, with neither team really making their mark, but Australia Diamond Kiera Austin, made sure Vixens went into the first break with a one goal lead, as she scored her 200th Super Shot in SSN history.

Thanks to Austin’s Super Shot, Vixen’s came back out firing in the second quarter winning 11-19, before then extending their lead again in the third quarter, ensuring no Mavericks final quarter comeback was enough.

Austin ended the match with 16 goals, three Super Shots, 19 goal assists and five turnovers as she put on an all-round top performance for Vixens.

NSW Swifts vs Queensland Firebirds

The final match of the round saw NSW Swifts take on Queensland Firebirds, and just like in many games this round a big second half was needed after the score sat at 32-32 going into half time.

Swifts flew out the blocks in the second half, winning the penultimate quarter 23-13, thanks two Super Shots from England Rose, Helen Housby, during the power five.

Australian Diamond, Sarah Klau, was also crucial to Swifts as she worked tirelessly at goal keeper piling on the pressure throughout.

Swifts third quarter masterclass ensured that no Firebirds fourth quarter comeback would be enough.
