Suncorp Netball Super League International Player Watch – Round 1

The Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) began this weekend with Adelaide Thunderbirds, Sunshine Coast Lightning, Queensland Firebirds and NSW Swifts getting off to winning starts live on NetballPass.*, Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge.

Each round this season we will pick one international player from each match that we believe deserves a spotlight:

Adelaide Thunderbirds vs Melbourne Vixens

In a 2024 Grand Final re-match, Adelaide Thunderbirds swooped in and stole the victory off Melbourne Vixens, beating them 66-53.

Jamaican Sunshine Girl Shamera Sterling-Humphrey started the new season just how she finished the last one, topping the deflections charts, with 10 to her name already after one game.

Melbourne Mavericks vs Sunshine Coast Lightning

It was third time lucky for Sunshine Coast Lightning as they managed to beat Melbourne Mavericks for the first time, having lost to them twice in Maverick’s inaugural 2024 season.

This week’s international spotlight for this fixture goes to Liz Watson, as the Australian Diamond made her 150th national league appearance.

Watson made 25 goal assists and put in 44 feeds, acting as a real playmaker at wing attack, as her Lightning side won 59-69.

Giants Netball vs Queensland Firebirds

Next up was the closest contest of the round, with Queensland Firebirds managing to hold on to their early lead, despite a Giants comeback, to win the match 57-62.

Uganda She Crane Mary Cholhok made her SSN debut for Firebirds in this contest, and she certainly did not disappoint scoring 43 of their 62 goals.

Cholhok now sits second in the goals scored charts, only behind another new SSN kid on the block New Zealand Silver Fern, Grace Nweke (more on her in a minute!).

West Coast Fever vs NSW Swifts

In perhaps the most anticipated SSN fixture of Round 1, NSW Swifts showed West Coast Fever they were not here to play this season, as they secured a 49-67 victory.

It was a first league outing for Swifts recruit, Silver Fern Grace Nweke, as she teamed up with England Rose Helen Housby in the shooting circle.

Nweke had a debut to remember as she scored 51 goals, putting her top of the statistics charts for goals scored at the conclusion of Round 1.
