Tonga 46 – 58 Fiji
Fiji who competed at last weeks Commonwealth Games, would get the days action underway against the only side in the competition who does not currently have an INF World Ranking. Tonga pushed the top ranked side all the way in what was a very close game.
The Pearls led by three after the first quarter, however, Tonga would win the second quarter 16-14 which left the scores at 27-26 in favor of Fiji at half time.
During the second half Fiji regained control of the game, however, Tonga still pushed the Pearls all the way. Eventually Fiji would see out the win with a twelve goal margin which gives them their first win of the competition.
Tomorrow, Fiji will play the Cook Islands who they are level on points with while Tonga play Papua New Guinea who have also lost both games so far.
Samoa 52 – 41 Papua New Guinea
Samoa remain on top of the leader board following a hard fought victory over Papua New Guinea. On day one, Samoa defeated Tonga while Papua New Guinea narrowly lost to the Cook Islands. Only three goals separated the two sides at half time with Samoa leading 24-21.
The margin began to increase in the third quarter with Samoa taking their chances and PNG finding it difficult to get through a good Samoan defense. Samoa would hold a 11 goal lead going into the final quarter in which they completed the job to secure their second victory in the competition.
On day three, Samoa will have a day of rest before returning to action on day four where they will play the Cook Islands.
