Mwai Kumwenda
Mwai Kumwenda first played netball aged 15, in her village in Malawi. She is now one of the stars of the international game, and was awarded the Player of the Tournament accolade at the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015.
Kumwenda’s Player of the Tournament win was backed by impressive statistics – the shooter’s success rate was 91% shots on target and, with 321 goals in eight games, she was the only player to score over 300 goals.
Kumwenda is Africa’s only netballer competing in the ANZ Championship – the world’s most prestigious netball league. In her first season as a professional netballer, in 2014, Kumwenda took home the league’s Best New Talent award. Now aged 26, Kumwenda’s agility and elevation continue to entertain netball crowds around the world. But off the court, Kumwenda is also keen to make an impact. Earlier this year, she collected many vehicle loads of sports kit, as well as household items, in her adopted home of Christchurch, New Zealand, to distribute back in Malawi.
