Today, Monday 8 March, marks International Women’s Day 2021 (IWD). This global day celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
The IWD 2021 campaign theme is ‘Choose to Challenge’. Individually, we’re all responsible for our actions and thoughts and we can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. Choose to Challenge is focused on seeking out and celebrating women’s achievements and helping to create a more inclusive world.
IWD has been observed since the early 1990’s with the first National Women’s Day observed in the United States on February 28th. In 1914, it was agreed that International Women’s Day would be celebrated annually on the 8th of March and this has remained the global date to celebrate women ever since.
INF President, Liz Nicholl, CBE comments: “It’s important we celebrate the success of women and their achievements today, and every day. I am proud to be President of a sport that over 20 million women and girls play around the world, and to be surrounded by women who are striving for success both within the sport and themselves.”
“Netball not only provides opportunities, but it also creates leadership opportunities at every level and an environment that enables women and girls to build key skills. From grass-roots to elite, the sport of netball creates a platform for women to play, grow and inspire themselves and others. Whether you’re a female coach, parent, fan, umpire or athlete, whatever role you play in our sport, today, we celebrate you and thank you.”
INF will be celebrating International Women’s Day across social media. Strike the #ChooseToChallenge post with your hand high to show your commitment to choose to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes, and help forge an inclusive world.
