The penultimate round of the Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) took place this weekend live on NetballPass, and it dealt another league shake up with the Minor Premiers still not confirmed, as the top three teams sit on the same points.
The Thunderbirds climbed into the top spot for the first time this season, after they beat Swifts by 12 goals meaning they are now 1st on goal percentage, whilst being joint on 40 points with Vixens and Fever.
Last year’s Premiership winners Thunderbirds, put on a dominant display against Swifts with international stars dominating at both ends of the court.
In defence, Jamaican Sunshine Girl, Shamera Sterling-Humphrey, continued her to impress as she made nine gains, showing just why she is top of the charts for deflections and interceptions this season, whilst at the other end of the court Australia’s Georgie Horjus put on a show as she acted as a real play maker in the circle, putting in 22 goal assists.
The other two Minor Premiership title contenders, Vixens and Fever, faced each other in Round 13, and as we predicted it was a fiercely competitive clash that went down to the final whistle and saw the teams eventually only separated by one goal.
After Vixens got the better of Fever earlier in the season, it was the visitors Fever that got their revenge this time round.
Just like in the Thunderbirds game, the Jamaican Sunshine Girls in Fever’s team shone, with Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard scoring 60 of her 61 shots, and Kadie-Ann Dehaney making seven gains and eight deflections, as Fever won 67-68.
These two results mean it is all still to play for in the SSN, with the Minor Premiership and home Semi-Finals up for grabs.
Elsewhere in the SSN, the battle is also still on for the 4th place spot, with Lightning only currently leading debutants Mavericks by goal percentage, after both teams took their points tally up to 24 this weekend, beating Firebirds and Giants respectively.
Mavericks beat Giants by just one goal in Round 13, as they managed to hold off the home sides comeback thanks to fantastic defensive work from the likes of Kim Jenner at goal defence who made 5 gains, including one key intercept in the dying minutes that allowed England Rose Eleanor Cardwell to score the winning goal.
Lightning on the other hand had a more convincing win over Firebirds, beating them 67-83, boosting their goal difference.
Young talent Leesa Mi Mi stepped up to the test in this match as she made 21 goal assists from 43 circle feeds and also made two important intercepts, in a performance that saw her named Player of the Match.
