ANZ Premiership International Player Watch – Round 9

With just one round to go in the ANZ Premiership (ANZP) regular season, Mystics have moved one step closer to claiming the league’s top spot, whilst Magic have boosted their chances of lifting off the bottom of the table following their second victory of the season over Pulse, all live on NetballPass*.

Here is this week’s International Player Watch:

Tactix vs Mystics

First up we had the top of the table clash between Tactix and Mystics, and it was everything and more that the viewers could’ve wished for as a final quarter Mystics comeback sent the game into extra time.

It was the second time in as many week’s that Mystics found themselves in extra time, and their experience was clear as they once again edged out the victory this time 51 – 53, keeping themselves firmly in the league’s top spot with one round to go.

Stand out international players included New Zealand Silver Fern’s Phoenix Karaka and Maia Wilson, with Karaka making one intercept and nine deflections at goal keeper and Wilson shooting at 95% scoring 38/40 of her shots – all which proved crucial in such a close contest.

Magic vs Pulse

We also had a bottom of the table match-up this weekend, with Magic welcoming Pulse to the Claudelands Arena.

This was a match of two halves with Pulse winning the first two quarters and Magic the last two.

In the end it was Magic’s dominant final 15 minutes, which they won 18 – 4, that proved the difference as they were able to beat Pulse 50 – 39, on what was a very special day for the home sides Co-Captain, Erena Mikaere.

The Silver Fern took to court for her 150th national league match, contributing three interceptions and eight deflections to Magic’s second win of the season.

Stars vs Steel

There was so stopping high scoring Steel this weekend as they climbed into 2nd place following a 59 – 71 victory over Stars.

It was Stars that shot out in the first quarter, winning this 16 – 13, however Steel then found their rhythm after the first break and ensured they dominated the rest of the game, with all 11 of their players taking to court.

New Zealand Silver Fern Aliyah Dunn once again showed why she tops the leagues charts as the most accurate shooter this season, scoring 55/56 of her shots taking her season tally up to 384 goals from 395 attempts.

2nd place Steel will now play none other than 3rd place Tactix in their final league game of the season, with only one point separating the two teams – you wont want to miss the final round!
