ANZ Premiership International Player Watch – Round 8

Round 8 of the ANZ Premiership (ANZP) took place this weekend, live and on demand on NetballPass, Sky Sport and TVNZ, with the top four changing again as Mystics climbed back into the top spot.

Here is this week’s International Player Watch:

Steel vs Magic

Steel stretched their winning streak to three as they beat Magic in Round 8 of the ANZP.

It was clear from the first whistle it was the home side that came into this game in form, as they controlled play in the opening three quarters.

Steel were able to transition the ball through court much easier than Magic, with Silver Fern Kimiora Poi leading the attacking end.

Poi linked up well with Silver Fern Georgia Heffernan, making 25 goal assists, 51 feeds, and one interception.

Magic made a comeback in the last 15 minutes, winning that quarter, but it was too little too late, as Steel won 65 – 56.

Pulse vs Tactix

Whilst Steel made it a three-game winning streak in Round 8, Pulse ended their three-game losing streak as they beat Tactix 59 – 50.

The victory keeps Pulse’s finals hopes alive, as they move back into 3rd on goal difference.

The home side did not miss a beat, with Silver Ferns on fire at both ends of the court, as they won the first three quarters and held off a Tactix comeback in the final one.

Kelly Jackson dominated in defence, making two interceptions and 10 deflections, whilst at the other end of the court, Amelia Walmsley continued to show why she is the top goal scorer in the league as she added 54 goals to her season tally of 361.

Stars vs Mystics

Mystics jumped to the top of the table with their 47 – 67 win allowing them to leapfrog Tactix.

The visitors won all four quarters, but it wasn’t until the second half that they really pulled away making a Stars comeback near on impossible.

In the shooting circle, Mystics welcomed back Australian Diamond Donnell Wallam, who went on to score the majority of their goals shooting at 91% accuracy.
