ANZ Premiership International Player Watch – Round 5

The ANZ Premiership (ANZP) Round 5 took place this weekend live and on demand on NetballPass for the international Netball Family, with Mystics making it back to back victories for the first time this season and Tactix returning to winning ways.

Here is this weeks International Player Watch:

Magic vs Steel

It was all about patience for the league leaders Steel in quarter one of this clash as they had to withstand the early pressure from Magic who were fighting for their first points of the season.

The battle between Magic’s New Zealand Silver Fern development squad player Georgie Edgecombe and Steels Ashleigh Poi in the mid court was one you could not take your eyes off in the opening stages, with the score sitting at 14-14 going into the first break.

However, Steels confidence shone after the first break as they went on to win the remaining three quarters with their strongest being the 2nd which they won 9 – 17.

The change in tempo came after a Serina Daunakamakama intercept, with the New Zealand U21 Netball World Youth Cup 2025 silver medallist stealing the ball on the transverse line to help her side take a two-goal lead which they then continued to extend.

Steel went on to win the game 48 – 61 and you can catch up on this match on NetballPass*, here.

Pulse vs Mystics

Mystics made it back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they beat Pulse 47 – 55.

The confidence in this Mystics side was clear from the first whistle as they entered this game off the back of beating previously unbeaten Tactix in Round 4.

New Zealand Silver Fern Catherine Hall made an instant impact to help her team to 5-0 lead in the opening minutes.

Hall went on to make two intercepts and four deflections, whilst at the other end of the court Sophia Lafaiali’i was clinical scoring 33/35 of her shots.

Pulse showed glimmers of hope in quarter two, winning this one 14-12.

But, Mystics bounced straight back in the second half winning the remaining quarters and the game.

Tactix vs Stars

Tactix returned to winning ways in Round 5 to ensure they stayed on the same points as Steel at the top; however, it was not an easy victory with high flying Stars putting them to the test.

Both teams came into this match off the back of similar records having only lost one match so far this season, and from the first whistle that was clear with them going goal for goal and the scores still sitting level going into the final minute of the 4th quarter.

Australian Ash Barnett and New Zealand U21 Laura Balmer stepped up to the test for Tactix with some invaluable defensive pressure in the closing stages helping their side regain possession and take a 52 – 50 victory.

Barnett finished the game with four intercepts and one deflection whilst Balmer made two intercepts and three deflections.
