ANZ Premiership International Player Watch – Round 5

Round 5 of the ANZ Premiership (ANZP) took place this weekend, live and on demand on NetballPass, Sky Sport and TVNZ, with away wins across the board.

Steel vs Tactix

Tactix retained their place at the top of the table, after they beat Steel 49 – 57 in Round 5 of the ANZP.

The away side dominated, winning the first three quarters of the match before taking their foot of the gas slightly to draw the final one.

Tactix defensive display was relentless, with Silver Ferns Karin Burger and Jane Watson working tirelessly to bat off any Steel comeback.

Burger not only did her job in defence but was also always available when needed on the centre passes, receiving eight of those.

Pulse vs Mystics

The defending Champions Mystics showed their strength as they beat Pulse 51 – 64, leapfrogging them in the table to return to 2nd place.

Replicating what was seen in the Steel vs Tactix game, Mystics won the first three quarters, before drawing the final one.

Sophia Lafaiali’I made her first ANZP start and was a key part of the puzzle for Mystics, as she scored 45 out of 46 of her shots, and finished the second quarter with a Super Shot on the buzzer that put Mystics a healthy 36 – 24 up.

Stars vs Magic

The final match of Round 5 saw Magic put on a masterclass in attack against Stars, beating them 54 – 71.

It was strong starts to both halves that saw Magic move ahead, with Silver Fern’s Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Saviour Tui   working seamlessly together in the shooting circle.

Tui scored a further 46 goals, putting her third in the goals scored charts, with 152 goals this season.
