ANZ Premiership International Player Watch – Round 3

Round 3 of the ANZ Premiership (ANZP) took place this weekend, live and on demand on NetballPass, Sky Sport and TVNZ, with Pulse and Tactix bouncing back from defeat, and Mystics beating Steel by just one goal.

Here is this weeks International Player Watch:

Stars vs Pulse

Pulse bounced back in Round 3 with a commanding performance against Stars, which saw them win all four quarters and take the game, 45-69.

It was a full team performance that led to their victory, making picking just one international stand out player a challenge.

However, we can’t ignore the top performance from Silver Fern Parris Mason at goal defence, receiving six centre passes as she helped her team transition through court, and making three interceptions, as a reward for the pressure she piled on in the shooting circle.

Magic vs Tactix

Both Magic and Tactix came into this clash off the back of losses, and it was clear from the start that both teams were keen to make amends and return to winning ways.

The lead ebbed and flowed throughout the contest, leaving it all still to play for in the final quarter as Tactix lead by just one goal.

Just like in the first game of this round it was the Silver Fern defenders that proved the difference, with Jane Watson and Karin Burger coming out on top against Magics shooters as they pushed them away from post.

Burger made three interceptions and two deflections, whilst Watson made two interceptions and three deflections, all of which eventually proved crucial to the final result which was 44-48 in Tactix favour.

Steel vs Mystics

The final match of the round was the closest, with only one goal separating the two sides at full time.

On the stroke of third quarter time, Mystics were dealt with a blow as their Australian Diamond shooter Donnell Wallam had to go off with an injury.

The away side were still able to enter the final quarter with a five-goal lead, but it was all to play for in the final quarter and changes were needed.

Mystics smartly moved midcourter Peta Toeava into goal attack for the final 9 minutes of the game, and the Samoan did not disappoint as she showed her versatility and slotted in well alongside Filda Vui.

Toeava scored one goal from as many attempts but put in 20 goal assists making sure Mystics still had a way into goal and secured the victory, 54-55.
