ANZ Premiership International Player Watch – Round 1

The ANZ Premiership (ANZP) got underway this weekend, with all six teams in action live and on demand on NetballPass, Sky Sports and TVNZ.

Here is the first international player watch of the season:

Pulse vs Magic

Pulse did not miss a beat in their first match of the season as they secured a 57-44 victory.

The home side got off to a flying start, winning the opening 15 minutes 15-6 and from then on they did enough to ensure Magic couldn’t bounce back.

Despite being on the eventual losing team, it was Magic and New Zealand Silver Fern captain, Ameliaranne Ekenasio, that made history in this match as she scored the first 2-point shot ever in the ANZP, following the new rules introduced into the league this season.

Mystics vs Stars

Title defenders Mystics got their season off to the perfect start in Round 1 of the ANZP, as they beat Stars 71 – 55.

First match nerves were present in the early stages for the hosts, with Stars winning the first quarter by two goals.

However, Mystics soon bounced back winning the remaining three quarters, as Australian Donnell Wallam shone in her debut scoring 52 goals.

Tactix vs Steel

The final match of the round was the closest, with Tactix and Steel only being separated by seven goals at full time.

In the first half they took a quarter each, and it was Steel that were up by one at the main break.

However, Tactix used their one goal deficit to fuel their fire for the second half and ensure they turned things over to take the 57-50 victory.

One international player that made a difference in the second half of this contest was New Zealand’s Martina Salmon, as she put up a crucial two point shot in the third quarter to push her side ahead by five.
