Suncorp Super Netball League International Player Watch – Round 9

Round 9 of the Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) took place live on NetballPass.*, Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge this weekend and it was one of derby dominance, as Sunshine Coast Lightning and Melbourne Vixens beat their local rivals once again.

Here is this week’s International Player Watch:

Queensland Firebirds vs Sunshine Coast Lightning

Sunshine Coast Lightning were derby champions for the 7th consecutive time, as they beat Queensland Firebirds 62 – 72 in Round 9 of the SSN.

In what started as a close encounter, it was three marginal quarter wins that saw Lightning push ahead.

Australian Diamond Courtney Bruce had a round to remember for Lightning, as she played her 150th national league game, making eight gains and 13 deflections in the process.

NSW Swifts vs West Coast Fever

West Coast Fever put an end to the Swifts party this weekend, as they dealt them with their first defeat of the season; 68 – 79.

It was Fever’s consistency and resilience that made sure they were rewarded, as they never allowed Swifts the chance to get back into the game.

Two Jamaican Sunshine Girls in particular did their part for Fever, with Kadie-Ann Dehaney unstoppable in defence as she piled the pressure on in the circle and hunted the ball down out of it, whilst Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard was clinical under the post at the other end, scoring 71 of her 72 shots.

Melbourne Vixens vs Melbourne Mavericks

Melbourne Vixens once again proved too strong for rivals Melbourne Mavericks, as they won 66 – 57.

The victory makes it three in a row for Vixen’s, who now sit 4th in the table.

Australian Diamond Sophie Garbin nailed the shooting game for Vixen’s as she scored 48 of her 51 attempts, as well as making two turnovers and claiming four rebounds – all which proved crucial in a game that was only separated by eight goals at the main break.

Adelaide Thunderbirds vs Giants Netball

Giants claimed their second win of the season, with a final quarter comeback seeing them beat Adelaide Thunderbirds 63 – 66.

With the two teams drawing the first quarter, before winning a quarter each, it was Thunderbirds who took a three-goal lead into the last quarter.

However, for Giants their second win of the season was still in touch with 15 minutes to go and it was clear they weren’t about to give up.

It all came down to Super Shot accuracy, with Giants Jo Harten and Sophie Dwyer both scoring 4/4 in this game, whilst the Thunderbirds shooters only scored 2/16, which inevitably proved costly.
