Round 4 of the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) League took place this weekend live on NetballPass, and once again the league did not disappoint with the international netball family able to watch history unfold as Melbourne Mavericks secured their first win.
After suffering defeats in their first three SSN matches, the pressure was on for the new kids on the block, Mavericks, to secure their first league win – and this time they faced Sunshine Coast Lightning.
Not only did Mavericks secure their first win, but they did so in style winning by one goal thanks to back-to-back Super Shots from Australia’s Gabby Sinclair, followed by a last minute goal from Jamaican Sunshine Girl Shimona Jok.
You can watch ex-England Rose head coach Tracey Neville make history with her Mavs side now on NetballPass.
Whilst it was a first win for Neville’s Mavericks side, for the other Melbourne side in the SSN, Vixens, Round 4 saw them record their 4th successive victory as they remain unbeaten. The other unbeaten side in the league after the first month is Fever.
For Vixen’s their 4th win came against Firebirds, whilst for Fever it was NSW Swifts that just weren’t strong enough.
Once again international players proved key in these two clashes with Fever’s Jamaican Sunshine Girl shooter, Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard remaining top of the tables in several categories including goals with 243 to her name and goal attempts with 248 recorded.
For Vixen’s it was their midcourt that made the difference, with Australia’s Hannah Mundy having a great game as she made 23 goal assists from 34 feeds, as well as 23 centre pass receives and four pickups.
The final game in the SSN saw Thunderbirds take on Giants, and once again Giants were left waiting for their first win of the season. They are now the only team without a win, after Mavericks recorded their first.
Thunderbirds however are flying high after this victory which sees them place third in the table with three victories to their name.
The defending champions won all four quarters against Giants in a clinical performance in which Tayla Williams and Jamaican Sunshine Girl Shamera Sterling-Humphrey particularly excelled.
Williams was a real play maker as she made 20 goal assists, 36 feeds and three interceptions, whilst Sterling-Humphrey was a force to be reckoned with once again in defence as she made two interceptions and four gains.
