The Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) League dealt some nail-biters in round three with not one, but two games going to extra time live on NetballPass.
The defending champions Adelaide Thunderbirds were one team put to the test, after they let their first quarter 6-17 lead fade away when Sunshine Coast Lightning made a second half come back to take the score to 50-50 at full time.
Thunderbirds then went on to regain control and take the win in extra time, with Jamaican Sunshine Girl Romelda Aiken-George regaining her rhythm, taking her goal scoring tally up to 43 and securing the victory.
The other game that went to extra time was Firebirds vs NSW Swifts, and once again it was the story of a shooter; England Rose, Helen Housby.
This was Housby’s 100th game for Swifts, and it is one she won’t forget as her team lost the first three quarters and had to rely on a last quarter comeback and extra time to take the win.
Housby scored 6/7 of her Super Shots and shot at 92% from one-point range and eventually it was the experience of players like the Netball World Cup 2023 Player of the tournament, as well as Australian Diamonds Sarah Klau, Maddy Proud and MVP Paige Hadley that made the difference in the extra 10 minutes as they controlled the game.
Elsewhere in the SSN West Coast Fever and Melbourne Vixens made it three from three as they beat Melbourne Mavericks and Giants.
Despite being the eventual losing side Mavericks did show signs up improvement against table toppers Fever, winning the first quarter 17-14 and the last quarter 19-15.
Australian Diamond Amy Parmenter was crucial for Mavericks at WD as she led the way as Captain making three interceptions, three gains and three turnovers, as well as receiving three centre passes to help her team out when needed.
Jamaican Sunshine Girl, Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard, was on hand to make sure that Fever’s unbeaten streak wasn’t ended though as she shot at 100% scoring all 50 of her one-point shots as Fever won 62-69.
Things weren’t as close in the Giants vs Vixens game, as the Melbourne side showed exactly why they are still unbeaten winning the first three quarters before drawing the final one, to take the win 44-63. The result leaves Giants also still searching for their first win.
