Overview

12 countries competed in the Birmingham 2022 (B2022) Commonwealth Games across 10 days of competition.

After two group stages, the two Semi-Finals were set up between England and Australia and New Zealand and Jamaica. The Sunshine Girls made history as they beat the Silver Ferns, 67-51 to progress to their first Commonwealth Games Grand Final, whilst Australia beat the hosts England 51-60 to book their spot in their 7th consecutive Grand Final.

The Final was a close contest, with the score sitting at 29-29 at half time leaving it all still to play for.

The Diamonds came out firing in the second half with their goal keeper Sarah Klau making an early deflection as her side went into a 5-goal lead.

Courtney Bruce then got another deflection with Australia getting their hands on any loose balls with 12 pickups in comparison to Jamaica’s 8.

Both teams battled until the end, with Australia taking the eventual win 51-55.

Meanwhile, it was the Silver Ferns that took home the Bronze medal from their 8th Commonwealth Games meeting with England, after they beat the Roses 55 – 48.

This was the Silver Ferns first Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, to go alongside their two Gold medals (2006 & 2010) and three Silver medals (1998, 2002 & 2014).
