World Mental Health Day 2020

World Mental Health Day is observed on the 10th of October every year. The overall objective of the day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health.

The goal of this year’s World Mental Health Day campaign is increased investment in mental health and comes at a time when daily lives have been changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past few months, the world as we know it has changed and has brought many challenges for millions around the world. According to the World Health Organisation, given past experiences of emergencies, it is expected that the need for mental health and psychosocial support will substantially increase in the coming months and years.

The sporting world has also changed significantly, and netball is a sport that has faced many changes and challenges. Countries have been put into lockdowns resulting in the sport being put on hold, from grass-roots to elite. Borders have been closed or restricted meaning there has been no opportunity for international netball. Our Members have also been affected, and our athletes, umpires, coaches and Netball Family have gone from being part of an incredible team sport to self-isolation which can not only be lonely but can also impact on mental health.

Whilst the future may be uncertain, the one thing that is certain is the strength of the Netball Family. Despite many hardships over recent months, the netball family is stronger than ever supporting each other today and every day. Whether you have lost a loved one, been impacted financially or not been able to see teammates and play the sport you love, remember the Netball Family is always here.
