United Nations’ International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

Last Wednesday, people around the world celebrated the United Nations’ International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. Holding an international day reflects the United Nations’ appreciation of the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, and social and economic development.

As in previous years, netball played its part in the 2016 Day – here are just a few of the stories from our sport.

 

Australia

Australia

Netball Australia was proud to be one of the key partners involved in launching the Australian Government’s Asian Sports Partnership last week. Netball Australia will receive AU$200,000 in funding to implement One Netball Asia, working with countries in the Asian Netball Federation to increase netball participation levels among women and girls, and contribute to improving health and leadership.

Australian Diamonds coach, Lisa Alexander (pictured above), has been in India, supporting coaches on the Naz Goal project. The project aims to transform the lives of girls and young women in India, through netball.

Tonga

Tonga

More than 500 people packed the Queen Salote Memorial Hall in Tonga to sample 12 different sports for International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. Netball proved popular with the young people present, including local girl Ocean Hine Dawber (pictured).

 

Samoa

Samoa

Samoa hosted the Pacific Women’s Parliamentary Forum last week, bringing together female elected representatives from across the region. The ladies found time for a game of netball to celebrate International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. Those taking part included former Silver Fern Louisa Wall, who is now a New Zealand Member of Parliament.
